The American Jewish Committee (AJC), through a press release that they posted today on the newswires, has officially announced that they’re mourning the passing of Teddy Kollek, the legendary mayor of Jerusalem from 1965 to 1993.

Here are some statements made by the American Jewish Committee regarding Teddy Kollek:

“Teddy Kollek had a unique ability to recognize the global significance of Jerusalem,” said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. “His creative and inspired leadership guided the city after it was reunited in 1967, and continued in his supervision of the many restoration projects that preserved the character of the Old City, keeping in mind the sensitivity of Jews, Christians and Muslims.”

Kollek’s renowned personal dedication to meeting the needs of all of Jerusalem’s residents, and, especially to encouraging positive Jewish-Arab relations, was a task often tested by the wider political environment.

“His vibrant, dynamic personality, as he engaged visitors, including many AJC delegations, and spoke proudly about the city he loved so much, is a memory we will long cherish and miss,” said Harris. “He had one of the toughest jobs imaginable, but he carried out his responsibilities with such energy, enthusiasm and effectiveness that he rightly became one of the most renowned mayors in the world.”
