According to a threadwatch post, threadwatch has decided to get on the seo contest bandwagon by hosting a Dave Pasternack contest. It’s Aaron Wall’s idea to host this Dave Pasternack Search Engine Optimization contest, which is all about Dave Pasternack of fame.

Threadwatch has decided to get on the SEO contest bandwagon. Whoever ranks #1 in Google for Dave Pasternack at noon Eastern on March 1st, 2007 wins $1,000 from Threadwatch. In addition to the $1,000 prize for the top ranking site, Threadwatch will also give away $100 to the most interesting PPC ad running at that time, as voted for by our editors.

Apparently there’s more than one Dave Pasternack, and apparently there’s more than one that can bake a cake well. But, we’re talking about this Dave Pasternack from DidIt, not the one who is a professional chef.

Dave Pasternick recently talked about SEO experts and says:

The article was about the apparent demystification of the SEO field. In other words, a growing number of companies are realizing that their sites need to be designed in accordance with the basic SEO guidelines described by Google, and that this knowledge should be and is becoming incorporated as a core competence of their internal Web teams. Many SEOs feel that this sudden emergence of rationality is threatening their profession…

I don’t think at all there’s some sort of sudden rationality that’s threatening the SEO profession. In fact, what’s threatening the profession is the lack of good SEOs who can actually get decent organic rankings and publicity for their sites and their clients. It’s getting tougher and tougher and the rules are always changing. Turns out that those who are calling themselves SEOs are failing miserably and are desperately trying to find other SEOs who actually know what they’re doing.

As someone who is an SEO, I find myself cleaning up the work of others constantly who claim that they’re SEOs.

Tony Wright has now chimed in and is adding his two cents to the Dave Pasternack SEO Contest and what Dave Pasternack has said about SEO: I totally agree with what Tony Wright has to say about Dave Pasternack:

This is too funny, although I’m wondering if Pasternack will try to spin this in any way. I’ve always thought he was a little too cocky for his own good. He’s dead wrong on his thinking about natural search.

Personally, I wonder if Mr. Dave Pasternack has ever done any SEO himself…if he has, then I’m not seeing any evidence of it whatsoever, especially because of all the great SEO on his site. Why doesn’t Dave Pasternack rank well for even his own name, Dave Pasternack? I’m puzzled. But maybe he doesn’t want to have a site or a blog of his own?

As an update, I’d like to say that I’ve just noticed that Did It actually posted something about Dave Pasternack on their blog announcing the Dave Pasternack SEO contest being sponsored by Threadwatch.

Web Pro Blog, a part of Web Pro News, is now covering the Dave Pasternack SEO contest, they’ve got a post that shows up in Google News.

Okay, well it’s now about a day after the contest announced…and this page has made it into the top 10 in Google for “Dave Pasternack”. The only other one there is the original Threadwatch entry.

Kevin Lee has decided to post about the Dave Pasternack SEO contest, saying that:

OK, this is getting funny. Threadwatch. is ruining a Dave Pasternack SEO contest (details here). All because Dave said SEO isn’t rocket science in response to data from a Marketing Sherpa report and having been in the SEO business for ten years.

How is Threadwatch ruining the Dave Pasternack SEO contest? Is it because threadwatch is giving $1000 to the winner? Perhaps. If I win the Dave Pasternack SEO contest then I will donate the money to the Dallas Fort Worth Search Engine Marketing Association, a non-profit organization.

In his post, Kevin Lee says:

Dave may end up more famous than the chef, owner of Esca (a great NYC seafood restaurant).

Does this mean that if you will be famous if you show up in the search results in Google?

  2. Yes, I have to admit that it looks like this whole thing is just for “link bait” but we’ll really see how many links people can get!

  3. Did It added a Dave Pasternack link to their blog on their own site and then edited their “about” page’s title tag to include Dave Pasternack’s name.

  4. What’s interesting to note is that this search at Google reveals absolutely nothing about Dave Pasternack. Really. If you do a site: search for Dave Pasternack and search only the site, then Dave Pasternack isn’t there anywhere.

  6. The first real “day” after the Dave Pasternack contest has started…the threadwatch post is ranking 5th (and 6th) on Google…and this page is ranking 9th on Google for ‘Dave Pasternack’. This Dave Pasternanck SEO contest sure is going to be interesting.

  7. I hate to have to point this out, but just looking at Kevin Lee’s blog/site at…there’s a title tag on that site that shows that he’s trying to rank well for “search engine marketing expert”. I’m not finding that domain anywhere in the top 5 pages of search results…

  8. Has anyone come across any plans to help out the professional chef of the same name as the target of the competition.

    Perhaps Aaron should think about asking people to be considerate and that on the cutoff date of the competition all links are all repointed to the chef’s website. The guy is presumably about drop off the rankings for his name without doing anything and actually does earn money from his name. Unlike his namesake that uses a company name.

  9. That’s a good point, John. It might be interesting to actually contact the real Dave Pasternack (the chef) and see if you can get some links from the contest entry page…and since it’s on-topic I’m wondering if that type of link would help out tremendously.

    I suspect, though, that it will be difficult to get a ranking higher than the Dave Pasternack chef pages that mention his name since those pages have gotten the majority of the initial links.
