George Zimmerman has been acquitted by a jury of his peers of shooting Trayvon Martin in Sanford Florida. From the beginning, I have always thought of this case as being a case regarding the controversial Stand Your Ground law, and not a race case.
This was never a race case until Benjamin Crump got involved. And then the Reverend Al Sharpton and the Reverend Jesse Jackson got involved, as well. The case has been receiving national attention because certain individuals are “playing the race card” here, which is opportunistic and pitiful.
There is no doubt or question as to whether or not George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer carrying a gun called the local Sanford Florida police and talked with dispatchers about Trayvon Martin walking through the neighborhood in the rain. Sure, Mr. Zimmerman followed him because there had been crimes committed in the past in the neighborhood. Crimes that were break-ins.
I am not excusing George Zimmerman from following Trayvon Martin. I do not believe that Mr. Zimmerman followed Trayvon Martin because of of his race. I believe he started following him because of the circumstances. If Trayvon Martin was white, Mr. Zimmerman would have followed him, too.
Let’s not forget about the circumstances in this case, what happened. There was a heated argument of some type, and, Trayvon Martin ended up “on top of” George Zimmerman. Mr. Zimmerman feared for his life.
George Zimmerman feared for his life. He was being “beaten up” by Trayvon Martin.
In the trial, there was testimony from a trainer that said that George Zimmerman was “a wimp” or something to that effect. He was “soft”, as I recall the trainer saying.
On the other hand, don’t forget that Trayvon Martin was experienced in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), and had the skills necessary to ‘beat up’ George Zimmerman.
The law in the State of Florida states that if you are in fear of your life, you have the right to ‘Stand Your Ground” and protect yourself. That’s what George Zimmerman was doing, and that is what he did. Granted, I would have preferred if George Zimmerman had a stun gun or even a taser. But he didn’t.
George Zimmerman was acquitted because of the laws of the State of Florida and the fact that he was in fear of his life. Trayvon Martin was “on top of” George Zimmerman, and he was in fear for his life. Let’s stop it right now.
The George Zimmerman / Trayvon Martin case is NOT about race. It’s about Standing Your Ground and protecting yourself. That is why George Zimmerman was acquitted of any wrongdoing.
Stop playing the race card. It isn’t about race anymore. That race card has expired.
